BFD_FAKE_SECTION and its sidekick GLOBAL_SYM_INIT don't need to be
cluttering bfd.h, and probably shouldn't be used outside bfd/. To
make them internal to bfd, make the bfd ecoff small common section
declaration global so it can be used instead of a duplicate in
gas/ecoff.c. Oddly this needs to go in bfd/ecofflink.c rather than
bfd/ecoff.c as the former is compiled for all targets needing the
ecoff small common section (some via a call in gas/config/obj-elf.c to
a function in gas/ecoff.c) while the latter is not.
While doing this rename ecoff_scom_section to _bfd_ecoff_scom_section
and remove support for traditional C from GLOBAL_SYM_INIT.
This field is always set to point to asection.symbol, and no code ever
changes it from its initial value. With one exception. elfxx-mips.c
creates two sections with separate pointers to their symbols, and uses
those as asection.symbol_ptr_ptr. Those pointers aren't modified,
so they disappear in this patch too.
Commit 68bbe11833 results in a lot of follow up work, much of which
likely is still to be done. (And yes, since this is all for corrupted
or fuzzed object files, a whole lot of work doesn't much benefit
anyone. It was a bad idea to put NULL in asymbol->name.) So I'm
changing the approach to instead put a unique empty string for symbols
with a corrupted st_name. An empty string won't require much work to
ensure nm, objcopy, objdump etc. won't crash, since these tools
already must work with unnamed local symbols.
The unique empty string is called bfd_symbol_error_name. This patch
uses that name string for corrupted symbols in the ELF and COFF
backends. Such symbols are displayed by nm and objdump as the
translated string "<corrupt>", which is what the COFF backend used to
put directly into corrupted symbols.
ie. it's the way I should have written the original patch, plus a few
tides and cleanups I retained from the reverted patches.
A NULL return from bfd_elf_string_from_elf_section indicates an error.
That shouldn't be masked by bfd_elf_sym_name but rather passed up to
callers such as group_signature. If we want to print "(null)" then
that should be done at a higher level. That's what this patch does,
except that I chose to print "<null>" instead, like readelf. If we
see "(null)" we're probably passing a NULL to printf. I haven't
changed aoutx.h or pdp11.c print_symbol functions because they already
handle NULL names by omitting the name. I also haven't changed
mach-o.c, mmo.c, som.c, srec.c, tekhex.c, vms-alpha.c and
wasm-module.c print_symbol function because it looks like they will
never have NULL symbol names.

In commit 6fc018e9e5 I replaced the fdr_ptr csym check against the
header isymMax count with a check against bfd symcount. In fact, both
checks are needed. The isymMax check sanity checks accesses against
the external sym array, the symcount one against the internal array.

Adds two new external authors to etc/update-copyright.py to cover
bfd/ax_tls.m4, and adds gprofng to dirs handled automatically, then
updates copyright messages as follows:
1) Update cgen/utils.scm emitted copyrights.
2) Run "etc/update-copyright.py --this-year" with an extra external
author I haven't committed, 'Kalray SA.', to cover gas testsuite
files (which should have their copyright message removed).
3) Build with --enable-maintainer-mode --enable-cgen-maint=yes.
4) Check out */po/*.pot which we don't update frequently.
These were renamed from bfd_read and bfd_write back in 2001 when they
lost an unnecessary parameter. Rename them back, and get rid of a few
casts that are only needed without prototyped functions (K&R C).
Freeing ecoff_debug_info "pointers to the unswapped symbolic info"
isn't a simple matter, due to differing allocation strategies. In
_bfd_ecoff_slurp_symbolic_info the pointers are to objalloc memory.
In the ecoff linker they are to separately malloc'd memory. In gas we
have most (obj-elf) or all (obj-ecoff) into a single malloc'd buffer.
This patch fixes the leaks for binutils and ld, leaving the gas leaks
for another day. The mips elf backend already had this covered, and
the ecoff backend had a pointer, raw_syments used as a flag, so most
of the patch is moving these around a little so they are accessible
for both ecoff and elf.

doc/bfdint.texi and comments in the aout and som code about this
function are just wrong, and its name is not very apt. Better would
be _bfd_mostly_destroy, and we certainly should not be saying anything
about the possibility of later recreating anything lost by this
function. What's more, if _bfd_free_cached_info is called when
creating an archive map to reduce memory usage by throwing away
symbols, the target _close_and_cleanup function won't have access to
tdata or section bfd_user_data to tidy memory. This means most of the
target _close_and_cleanup function won't do anything, and therefore
sometimes will result in memory leaks.
This patch fixes the documentation problems and moves most of the
target _close_and_cleanup code to target _bfd_free_cached_info.
Another notable change is that bfd_generic_bfd_free_cached_info is now
defined as _bfd_free_cached_info rather than _bfd_bool_bfd_true,
ie. the default now frees objalloc memory.
Yet another fuzzer fix.

Another fix for fuzzed object files, exhibiting as a segfault in

A case of a string section ending with an unterminated string. Fix it

Change FIX so that unused pointers that escape the UPDATE_RAW_END
sanity checks won't result in overflows. Also sanity check the local

pointers into swapped internal data to NULL if count is zero.

Anti-fuzzer measures. The checks don't ensure the various elements in
the header are distinct, but that isn't important as far as making
sure we don't overrun the buffer containing all the elements. Also,
we now don't care about offsets where the corresponding count is zero.

Similar to commit c799eddb35, but for mips-ecoff. mips-ecoff is
marked obsolete, but we still allow reading of these object files in
a number of mips targets.

The newer update-copyright.py fixes file encoding too, removing cr/lf
on binutils/bfdtest2.c and ld/testsuite/ld-cygwin/exe-export.exp, and
embedded cr in binutils/testsuite/binutils-all/ar.exp string match.
This extends the commit 4581a1c7d3 fix to more targets, which
hardens BFD a little. I think the real underlying problem was the
bfd_canonicalize_reloc call in load_specific_debug_section which
passed a NULL for "symbols". Fix that too.

These two macros print either a 16 digit hex number or an 8 digit
hex number. Unfortunately they depend on both target and host, which
means that the output for 32-bit targets may be either 8 or 16 hex
digits.
Replace them in most cases with code that prints a bfd_vma using
PRIx64. In some cases, deliberately lose the leading zeros.
This change some output, notably in base/offset fields of m68k
disassembly which I think looks better that way, and in error
messages. I've kept leading zeros in symbol dumps (objdump -t)
and in PE header dumps.

This tidies initialisation of target common sections, doing so using a
static initialiser rather than via code and deleting unnecessary

The patch also initialises ecoff.c:bfd_debug_section using
BFD_FAKE_SECTION. That does change bfd_debug_section slightly,
output_section was NULL now bfd_debug_section, and symbol_ptr_ptr
was NULL now &bfd_debug_section.symbol, but I believe those changes
are safe.

git commit 49d9fd42ac chose to make nm print 'C' for the normal
common section, and 'c' for other commons. This was an attempt to
make common symbols in .scommon and other small common sections show
a 'c' type without a section name comparison, but it failed for
nm --plugin on lto objects where normal common symbols are stashed in
a "plug" section. It's also wrong for large common symbols. So
instead set SEC_SMALL_DATA on sections created for small commons, and
key off that flag to show 'c' type. If your ELF target doesn't have
an elf_backend_symbol_processing function, then you won't see 'c' for
symbols in .scommon.
Note that due to bfd_decode_symclass decoding common symbols without
a chance for coff_section_type to treat .scommon specially, then
having .scommon in the array of special sections handled by
coff_section_type prior to 49d9fd42ac was entirely ineffective.
That fact escaped me when writing 49d9fd42ac. Unless .scommon
didn't have SEC_IS_COMMON set, which would be a little weird.

In git commit 806470a219 I swapped the order of internal vs. external
relocs memory allocation in ecoff_slurp_reloc_table, the idea being
that the external reloc size can be sanity checked against file size.
However, that fails badly with bfd_alloc memory where releasing any
block also releases all more recently allocated blocks.
* ecoff.c (ecoff_slurp_reloc_table): Malloc external_relocs so
they can be freed without also freeing internal_relocs.
* ecoff.c (_bfd_ecoff_slurp_armap): Sanity check parsed_size and
symbol count. Allocate an extra byte to ensure name strings

error return.
This patch arranges for symbols defined in .sdata and .sbss to be
reported by nm with 'g' and 's' flags, for coff targets that support
.sdata and .sbss.
The assembler changes regarding SEC_SMALL_DATA are really just
documentation. As far as I'm aware, this won't change any assembler
output.

Clang's integrated assembler supports multiple section with the same
name:
.section .text,"ax",@progbits,unique,1
nop
.section .text,"ax",@progbits,unique,2

"unique,N" assigns the number, N, as the section ID, to a section. The
valid values of the section ID are between 0 and 4294967295. It can be
used to distinguish different sections with the same section name.
This is useful with -fno-unique-section-names -ffunction-sections.
-ffunction-sections by default generates .text.foo, .text.bar, etc.
Using the same string can save lots of space in .strtab.
This patch adds section_id to bfd_section and reuses the linker
internal bit in BFD section flags, SEC_LINKER_CREATED, for assmebler
internal use to mark valid section_id. It also updates objdump to
compare section pointers if 2 sections comes from the same file since
2 different sections can have the same section name.
