Rename bfd_bread and bfd_bwrite
These were renamed from bfd_read and bfd_write back in 2001 when they lost an unnecessary parameter. Rename them back, and get rid of a few casts that are only needed without prototyped functions (K&R C). |

Fix mmo memory leaks
The main one here is the section buffer, which can be quite large. By using alloc rather than malloc we can leave tidying memory to the generic bfd code when the bfd is closed. bfd_check_format also releases memory when object_p fails, so while it wouldn't be wrong to bfd_release at bad_format_free in mmo_object_p, it's a little extra code and work for no gain. * mmo.c (mmo_object_p): bfd_alloc rather than bfd_malloc lop_stab_symbol. Don't free/release on error. (mmo_get_spec_section): bfd_zalloc rather than bfd_zmalloc section buffer. (mmo_scan): Free fname on another error path. |

The newer update-copyright.py fixes file encoding too, removing cr/lf on binutils/bfdtest2.c and ld/testsuite/ld-cygwin/exe-export.exp, and embedded cr in binutils/testsuite/binutils-all/ar.exp string match. |

bfd, binutils, gas: Remove/mark unused variables
Clang generates a warning on unused (technically, written but not read thereafter) variables. By the default configuration (with "-Werror"), it causes a build failure (unless "--disable-werror" is specified). bfd: Add bfd_find_nearest_line_with_alt
bfd_find_nearest_line_with_alt functions like bfd_find_nearest_line with the addition of a parameter for specifying the filename of a supplementary debug file such as one referenced by .gnu_debugaltlink or .debug_sup. This patch focuses on implementing bfd_find_nearest_line_with_alt support for ELF/DWARF2 .gnu_debugaltlink. For other targets this function simply sets the invalid_operation bfd_error. |

asan: heap buffer overflow in mmo_scan
mmo_get_loc needs to handle arbitrary vma and size chunks. Fuzzers found that it wasn't working so well when the end of chunks were getting close to address wrap-around. * mmo.c (mmo_get_loc): Make "size" unsigned. Avoid arithmetic overflow when calculating whether range hits an existing chunk. |

Get rid of fprintf_vma and sprintf_vma
These two macros print either a 16 digit hex number or an 8 digit
hex number. Unfortunately they depend on both target and host, which
means that the output for 32-bit targets may be either 8 or 16 hex
digits.
Replace them in most cases with code that prints a bfd_vma using
PRIx64. In some cases, deliberately lose the leading zeros.
This change some output, notably in base/offset fields of m68k
disassembly which I think looks better that way, and in error
messages. I've kept leading zeros in symbol dumps (objdump -t)
and in PE header dumps.

Update year range in copyright notice of binutils files
The result of running etc/update-copyright.py --this-year, fixing all the files whose mode is changed by the script, plus a build with --enable-maintainer-mode --enable-cgen-maint=yes, then checking out */po/*.pot which we don't update frequently. The copy of cgen was with commit d1dd5fcc38ead reverted as that commit breaks building of bfp opcodes files. |

mmo_get_loc can return NULL. It's commented even, and that the caller then must handle a split field. mmo_xore_* don't handle split fields, instead just segfault. Stop that happening, and refuse to recognise fuzzed mmo files that trigger this problem. * mmo.c (mmo_get_loc): Don't declare inline. (mmo_xore_64, mmo_xore_32, mmo_xore_16): Remove forward decls. Return pointer, don't dereference NULL. (mmo_scan): Return error on mmo_get_loc returning NULL. |

ELF: Don't generate unused section symbols
For ELF targets, section symbols are required only for relocations. With -ffunction-sections -fdata-sections, there can be many unused section symbols. Sizes of libstdc++.a on Linux/x86-64 in GCC 11 are With unused section symbols : 39411698 bytes Without unused section symbols: 39227002 bytes The unused section symbols in libstdc++.a occupy more than 180 KB. Add BSF_SECTION_SYM_USED to indicate if a section symbol should be included in the symbol table. The BSF_SECTION_SYM_USED should be set if the section symbol is used for relocation or the section symbol is always included in the symbol table. Add keep_unused_section_symbols to bfd_target to indicate if unused section symbols should be kept. If TARGET_KEEP_UNUSED_SECTION_SYMBOLS is defined as FALSE, unused ection symbols will be removed. Tested on Linux/x86. Other ELF backends need to: 1. Define TARGET_KEEP_UNUSED_SECTION_SYMBOLS to FALSE. 2. Mark used section symbols in assembler backend. 3. mmo.c: Fix ld testsuite regression "objcopy executable (pr25662)".
* mmo.c (mmo_scan): Create .text section only when needed, not from the start. For the test-case at hand, the .data section is created and output first by the linker, but the mmo input-reader mmo_scan always creates a .text section. Since sections are output in the order in which they're created, it's output first, breaking the assumption that obcopy without options (or with -p) creates output identical to its input. The point of creating it at the top of mmo_scan is a trivial default assignment for the current section variable "sec". Instead we now defer the default, creating it only when needed and sec is NULL. |

bfd_cleanup for object_p
The object_p (and archive_p, core_file_p) functions are not supposed to have any target specific malloc'd memory attached to the bfd on their return. This should be obvious on a failure return, but it's also true for a successful return. The reason is that even though the object_p recognises the file, that particular target may not be used and thus the bfd won't be closed calling close_and_cleanup for the target that allocated the memory. It turns out that the object_p bfd_target* return value isn't needed. In all cases except ld/plugin.c the target is abfd->xvec and with ld/plugin.c the target isn't used. So this patch returns a cleanup function from object_p instead, called in bfd_check_format_matches to tidy the bfd before trying a different target match. The only cleanup that does anything at this stage is the alpha-vms one. bfd/ * targets.c (bfd_cleanup): New typedef. bfd_section_* macros
This large patch removes the unnecessary bfd parameter from various bfd section macros and functions. The bfd is hardly ever used and if needed for the bfd_set_section_* or bfd_rename_section functions can be found via section->owner except for the com, und, abs, and ind std_section special sections. Those sections shouldn't be modified anyway. The patch also removes various bfd_get_section_<field> macros, replacing their use with bfd_section_<field>, and adds bfd_set_section_lma. I've also fixed a minor bug in gas where compressed section renaming was done directly rather than calling bfd_rename_section. Remove bfd stub function casts.
This patch defines a bunch of new functions to use in the BFD target structs rather than casting bfd_false or bfd_true and similar stub functions. I've also renamed the stub functions to reflect their parameters and put "error" in the name if they set bfd_error. The latter change is important since there were quite a few uses of bfd_false where setting bfd_error was inappropriate, for example in elf_backend_allow_non_load_phdr and is_target_special_symbol. * libbfd.c (_bfd_bool_bfd_false_error): Rename from bfd_false. Fix compilation of the BFD sub-directory with a gcc v8 compiler by adding extra casts.
GCC v8 issues warnings about mis-matching casts of function pointers. A previous patch tried to fix this problem by adding new dummy functions which accepted a variable number of arguments. But this introduces serious problems when compiled with other versions of gcc, (notably gcc 4.4). This patch reverts that previous solution and instead adds extra casts (to function types without a parameter list). arithmetic on void * is undefined in ISO C, so we should avoid it. In GNU C sizeof void * is defined as 1, and that is pretty clearly what this code wants, so change it to do arithmetic on bfd_byte *. Unfortunately most of the argument types come from virtual function interfaces so changing the types to bfd_byte * isn't trivial though it might make the code clearer.
