3719472095 Use gnulib c-ctype module in gdb
PR ada/33217 points out that gdb incorrectly calls the <ctype.h>
functions. In particular, gdb feels free to pass a 'char' like:

    char *str = ...;
    ... isdigit (*str)

This is incorrect as isdigit only accepts EOF and values that can be
represented as 'unsigned char' -- that is, a cast is needed here to
avoid undefined behavior when 'char' is signed and a character in the
string might be sign-extended. (As an aside, I think this API seems
obviously bad, but unfortunately this is what the standard says, and
some systems check this.)

Rather than adding casts everywhere, this changes all the code in gdb
that uses any <ctype.h> API to instead call the corresponding c-ctype
function.

Now, c-ctype has some limitations compared to <ctype.h>. It works as
if the C locale is in effect, so in theory some non-ASCII characters
may be misclassified. This would only affect a subset of character
sets, though, and in most places I think ASCII is sufficient -- for
example the many places in gdb that check for whitespace.
Furthermore, in practice most users are using UTF-8-based locales,
where these functions aren't really informative for non-ASCII
characters anyway; see the existing workarounds in gdb/c-support.h.

Note that safe-ctype.h cannot be used because it causes conflicts with
readline.h. And, we canot poison the <ctype.h> identifiers as this
provokes errors from some libstdc++ headers.

9c1f84c9b4 [gdbsupport] Reimplement phex and phex_nz as templates
Gdbsupport functions phex and phex_nz have a parameter sizeof_l:
...
extern const char *phex (ULONGEST l, int sizeof_l);
extern const char *phex_nz (ULONGEST l, int sizeof_l);
...
and a lot of calls use:
...
  phex (l, sizeof (l))
...

Make this easier by reimplementing the functions as a template, allowing us to
simply write:
...
  phex (l)
...

Simplify existing code using:
...
$ find gdb* -type f \
    | xargs sed -i 's/phex (\([^,]*\), sizeof (\1))/phex (\1)/'
$ find gdb* -type f \
    | xargs sed -i 's/phex_nz (\([^,]*\), sizeof (\1))/phex_nz (\1)/'
...
and manually review:
...
$ find gdb* -type f | xargs grep "phex (.*, sizeof.*)"
$ find gdb* -type f | xargs grep "phex_nz (.*, sizeof.*)"
...

Tested on x86_64-linux.

84da4a1ea0 gdbserver: refactor the definition and uses of supply_regblock
The supply_regblock function takes a pointer to a buffer as an
argument and implements two different behavior based on the pointer
being null. There are two cases where we pass nullptr, all in
tracepoint.cc, where we are essentially doing a reset on the regcache.

In fast_tracepoint_ctx::regcache, register_status array does not
even exist. Hence, that use simply boils down to zeroing of register
data. Do this at the time of creating the buffer and remove the call
to supply_regblock.

In fetch_traceframe_registers, inline the use with a call to `reset`.

Hence, there are no more cases left, where a nullptr would be passed
to supply_regblock. Assert that the buffer argument is non-null and
simplify the implementation.

ddf8e29147 gdbserver: convert init_register_cache and new_register_cache into constructors
This is a refactoring that converts

  init_register_cache (struct regcache *regcache,
                       const struct target_desc *tdesc,
                       unsigned char *regbuf)

  regcache (const target_desc *tdesc, unsigned char *regbuf)

and converts

  new_register_cache (const struct target_desc *tdesc)

into the constructor

  regcache (const target_desc *tdesc)

Also use DISABLE_COPY_AND_ASSIGN for additional compile-time safety.

072208e719 gdbserver: use inheritance more to define tracepoint contexts
This is a continuation of the previous refactoring to use inheritance
in the definition of tracepoints contexts. Again, no behavioral change
is intended.

Different tracepoint contexts are identified by the `type` field. The
field is used only in `get_context_regcache`, where we essentially
have 2 cases, each corresponding to a tracepoint context type. Remove
the `type` field and split the `get_context_regcache` function into 2
virtual method implementations.

Tested by rebuilding gdbserver with '--enable-inprocess-agent=no' and
'--enable-inprocess-agent=yes'.

dcaf6d3f43 gdbserver: add back lost comments in fast_tracepoint_ctx
Before the removal of the UST/static-tracepoint support, the
`static_tracepoint_ctx` struct contained comments for its fields,
whereas `fast_tracepoint_ctx` did not. Nevertheless, those comments
also applied to `fast_tracepoint_ctx`. With the removal of
`static_tracepoint_ctx`, the comments were lost, making
`fast_tracepoint_ctx` data members completely commentless. Add back
those comments.

1956ad8d66 gdbserver: remove handling of the 'L' tracepoint action
Now that static tracepoint support is removed from gdbserver, it makes
sense to remove handling of the 'L' tracepoint action, too. The code
that checks received actions already has a default case that tolerates
unrecognized actions:

        default:
          trace_debug ("unknown trace action '%c', ignoring...", *act);

In case 'L' is unexpectedly received, we would at least be able to see
this in the logs.

a00b56ff16 gdbserver: remove the static_tracepoint enum value
As a continuation of the previous patches that remove UST from

Now that the last use of `write_e_static_tracepoints_not_supported`

The handling of the 'S' option, where the `static_tracepoint` enum
value was being used, is removed completely, because recognizing that
option makes sense only when static tracepoint support is announced.

a4451f7c81 gdbserver: remove UST (static tracepoint) support (part 1)
UST support in gdbserver is substantially outdated. Simon says:

  ...[having HAVE_UST defined] never happens nowadays because it used
  a version of lttng-ust that has been deprecated for a loooong time
  (the 0.x series). So everything in HAVE_UST just bitrots. It might
  be possible to update all this code to use lttng-ust 2.x (1.x never
  existed), but I don't think it's going to happen unless somebody
  specifically asks for it. I would suggest removing support for UST
  from gdbserver. ...If we ever want to resurrect the support for UST
  and port to 2.x, we can get the code from the git history.

This patch removes the support, mostly mechanically by deleting code
guarded by `#ifdef HAVE_UST`. After these removals, `struct
static_tracepoint_ctx` becomes unused. So, remove it, too.

The following patches remove more code.

424646edf4 gdbserver: handle all eval_result_type values in tracepoint.cc
It was pointed out[1] that after this commit:

  commit 3812b38d8d
  Date:   Thu Oct 20 11:14:33 2022 +0100

      gdbserver: allow agent expressions to fail with invalid memory access

Now that agent expressions might fail with the error
expr_eval_invalid_memory_access, we might overflow the
eval_result_names array in tracepoint.cc. This is because the
eval_result_names array does not include a string for either
expr_eval_invalid_goto or expr_eval_invalid_memory_access.

I don't know if having expr_eval_invalid_goto missing is also a
problem, but it feels like eval_result_names should just include a
string for every possible error.

I could just add two more strings into the array, but I figure that a
more robust solution will be to move all of the error types, and their
associated strings, into a new ax-result-types.def file, and to then
include this file in both ax.h and tracepoint.cc in order to build
the enum eval_result_type and the eval_result_names string array.
Doing this means it is impossible to have a missing error string in
the future.

0576dff20f gdbserver: allows agent_mem_read to return an error code
Currently the gdbserver function agent_mem_read ignores any errors
from calling read_inferior_memory. This means that if there is an
attempt to access invalid memory then this will appear to succeed.

In this patch I update agent_mem_read so that if read_inferior_memory
fails, agent_mem_read will return an error code.

However, none of the callers of agent_mem_read actually check the
return value, so this commit will have no effect on anything. In the
next commit I will update the users of agent_mem_read to check for the
error code.

I've also updated the header comments on agent_mem_read to better
reflect what the function does, and its possible return values.

f34652de0b internal_error: remove need to pass __FILE__/__LINE__
Currently, every internal_error call must be passed __FILE__/__LINE__
explicitly, like:

  internal_error (__FILE__, __LINE__, "foo %d", var);

The need to pass in explicit __FILE__/__LINE__ is there probably
because the function predates widespread and portable variadic macros
availability. We can use variadic macros nowadays, and in fact, we
already use them in several places, including the related
gdb_assert_not_reached.

So this patch renames the internal_error function to something else,
and then reimplements internal_error as a variadic macro that expands
__FILE__/__LINE__ itself.

The result is that we now should call internal_error like so:

  internal_error ("foo %d", var);

Likewise for internal_warning.

The patch adjusts all calls sites. 99% of the adjustments were done
with a perl/sed script.

The non-mechanical changes are in gdbsupport/errors.h,
gdbsupport/gdb_assert.h, and gdb/gdbarch.py.

to be that if something goes wrong, we warn but let the program
execute. So crashing on this failed assertions seems against the intent.

Commit 6cebaf6e1a ("use xsnprintf instead of snprintf.") changed this
code to use xsnprintf instead of snprintf, introducing this assertion.
Before that, snprintf would return a value bigger that UNIX_PATH_MAX and
the "if" after would catch it and emit a warning, which is exactly what
we want. That change was done because LynxOS didn't have snprintf.
Since LynxOS isn't supported anymore, we can simply revert to use
snprintf there.

With this patch, we get a warning (printed by the caller of
gdb_agent_socket_init), but the program keeps executing:

    $ LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libasan.so.6:./libinproctrace.so /bin/ls
    ipa: could not create sync socket
    ...

b2c7007bdd gdbserver/tracepoint.cc: work around -Wstringop-truncation error
When building gdb with on AArch64 with g++ 11.1.0 (and some preceding

Note that _FORTIFY_SOURCE changes the message a bit, but I get a similar
error if I use -D_FORTIFY_SOURCE=0.

I am pretty sure it's spurious and might be related to this GCC bug:

  https://gcc.gnu.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=88780

From what I can see, we are copying from a static 108 bytes long buffer
(the global array agent_socket_name) to a 108 bytes long array,
sockaddr_un::sun_path.  I don't see anything wrong.

Still, it would make things easier if we didn't see this error. Change
the code to check that the source string length is smaller than the
destination buffer (including space for the NULL byte) and use strcpy.

For anybody who would like to try to reproduce, the full command line
is:

    g++     -I. -I/home/simark/src/binutils-gdb/gdbserver -I/home/simark/src/binutils-gdb/gdbserver/../gdb/regformats -I/home/simark/src/binutils-gdb/gdbserver/.. -I/home/simark/src/binutils-gdb/gdbserver/../include -I/home/simark/src/binutils-gdb/gdbserver/../gdb -I/home/simark/src/binutils-gdb/gdbserver/../gnulib/import -I../gnulib/import -I/home/simark/src/binutils-gdb/gdbserver/.. -I..   -pthread -Wall -Wpointer-arith -Wno-unused -Wunused-value -Wunused-variable -Wunused-function -Wno-switch -Wno-char-subscripts -Wempty-body -Wunused-but-set-parameter -Wunused-but-set-variable -Wno-sign-compare -Wno-error=maybe-uninitialized -Wno-mismatched-tags -Wsuggest-override -Wimplicit-fallthrough=3 -Wduplicated-cond -Wshadow=local -Wdeprecated-copy -Wdeprecated-copy-dtor -Wredundant-move -Wmissing-declarations -Wmissing-prototypes -Wstrict-null-sentinel -Wformat -Wformat-nonliteral -Werror -DGDBSERVER  -DCONFIG_UST_GDB_INTEGRATION -Drpl_strerror_r=strerror_r -Drpl_free=free -fPIC -DIN_PROCESS_AGENT -fvisibility=hidden -g3 -O2 -fsanitize=address   -c -o tracepoint-ipa.o -MT tracepoint-ipa.o -MMD -MP -MF ./.deps/tracepoint-ipa.Tpo /home/simark/src/binutils-gdb/gdbserver/tracepoint.cc

24583e45ef gdbserver: replace direct assignments to current_thread
Replace the direct assignments to current_thread with
switch_to_thread.  Use scoped_restore_current_thread when appropriate.
There is one instance remaining in linux-low.cc's wait_for_sigstop.
This will be handled in a separate patch.

Regression-tested on X86-64 Linux using the native-gdbserver and
native-extended-gdbserver board files.

61d7f128e6 gdbserver: make target_pid_to_str return std::string
I wanted to write a warning that included two target_pid_to_str calls,
like this:

    warning (_("Blabla %s, blabla %s"),
	     target_pid_to_str (ptid1),
	     target_pid_to_str (ptid2));

This doesn't work, because target_pid_to_str stores its result in a
static buffer, so my message would show twice the same ptid. Change
target_pid_to_str to return an std::string to avoid this. I don't think
we save much by using a static buffer, but it is more error-prone.

dda83cd783 gdb, gdbserver, gdbsupport: fix leading space vs tabs issues
Many spots incorrectly use only spaces for indentation (for example,
there are a lot of spots in ada-lang.c). I've always found it awkward
when I needed to edit one of these spots: do I keep the original wrong
indentation, or do I fix it? What if the lines around it are also
wrong, do I fix them too? I probably don't want to fix them in the same
patch, to avoid adding noise to my patch.

So I propose to fix as much as possible once and for all (hopefully).

One typical counter argument for this is that it makes code archeology
more difficult, because git-blame will show this commit as the last
change for these lines. My counter counter argument is: when
git-blaming, you often need to do "blame the file at the parent commit"
anyway, to go past some other refactor that touched the line you are
interested in, but is not the change you are looking for. So you
already need a somewhat efficient way to do this.

Using some interactive tool, rather than plain git-blame, makes this
trivial. For example, I use "tig blame <file>", where going back past
the commit that changed the currently selected line is one keystroke.
It looks like Magit in Emacs does it too (though I've never used it).
Web viewers of Github and Gitlab do it too. My point is that it won't
really make archeology more difficult.

The other typical counter argument is that it will cause conflicts with
existing patches. That's true... but it's a one time cost, and those
are not conflicts that are difficult to resolve. I have also tried "git
rebase --ignore-whitespace", it seems to work well. Although that will
re-introduce the faulty indentation, so one needs to take care of fixing
the indentation in the patch after that (which is easy).

27087b7f6c Apply 'const' in more places
Many global arrays in gdb could be marked "const" but are not. This
patch changes some of them. (There may be other arrays that could
benefit from this treatment. I only examined arrays of strings.)

This lets the linker move some symbols to the readonly data section.
For example, previously:

0000000000000000 d _ZL18can_use_agent_enum

is now:

0000000000000030 r _ZL18can_use_agent_enum

feacfcacaa gdbserver: rename source files to .cc
For the same reasons outlined in the previous patch, this patch renames
gdbserver source files to .cc.

I have moved the "-x c++" switch to only those rules that require it.

gdbserver/ChangeLog:

	* Makefile.in: Rename source files from .c to .cc.
	* %.c: Rename to %.cc.
	* configure.ac: Rename server.c to server.cc.
	* configure: Re-generate.
