sec->alloced and freeing section contents
This modifies _bfd_elf_free_cached_info to unmap/free section contents. To do that we need to *not* free sections where contents are bfd_alloc'd or point to constant strings or somesuch. I've chosen to implement this be adding another flag to struct bfd_section, "alloced" to say the section contents can't be freed. Most of the patch is about setting that flag in many places. |

Update year range in copyright notice of binutils files
Adds two new external authors to etc/update-copyright.py to cover bfd/ax_tls.m4, and adds gprofng to dirs handled automatically, then updates copyright messages as follows: 1) Update cgen/utils.scm emitted copyrights. 2) Run "etc/update-copyright.py --this-year" with an extra external author I haven't committed, 'Kalray SA.', to cover gas testsuite files (which should have their copyright message removed). 3) Build with --enable-maintainer-mode --enable-cgen-maint=yes. 4) Check out */po/*.pot which we don't update frequently. |

The result of running etc/update-copyright.py --this-year, fixing all the files whose mode is changed by the script, plus a build with --enable-maintainer-mode --enable-cgen-maint=yes, then checking out */po/*.pot which we don't update frequently. The copy of cgen was with commit d1dd5fcc38ead reverted as that commit breaks building of bfp opcodes files. |

C99 bfd configury
Certain library headers and functions are required by C99. This removes configure tests for them. The patch also removes AC_ISC_POSIX and AC_HEADER_DIRENT, which the autoconf manual states are obsolescent. sys/time.h is no longer tangled up with time.h so it can be handled by the gprof configure. * configure.ac: Don't check for long long or long double type. Don't check for alloca.h, limits.h, stddef.h, stdlib.h, string.h, strings.h, time.h, wchar.h, wctype.h or sys/time.h. Don't check for strtoull, free, malloc, realloc, getenv, strstr, snprintf, vsnprintf, strlen or setitimer. Sort AC_CHECK_DECLS. (AC_ISC_POSIX): Don't invoke. (AC_HEADER_TIME, AC_HEADER_DIRENT, ACX_HEADER_STRING): Likewise. * sysdep.h: Remove many HAVE_*_H checks and fallback declarations. Do test HAVE_SYS_TYPES_H. Don't include sys/time.h. bfd_size_type to size_t
bfd_size_type was invented a long time ago in the K&R days. Many places in binutils ought to be using size_t instead (and there are lots of places that use long or unsigned long that really ought to use size_t too). Note that you can't change everything over to size_t: A 32-bit host needs a larger type than size_t to support reading and processing of 64-bit ELF object files. This patch just tidies some of the more obvious uses of bfd_size_type that could be size_t. There no doubt are more lurking in the source. Incidentally, practically all functions used for output of object files can use size_t and don't need to worry about overflow of size expressions. If you have something like symcount * sizeof (void *) when symcount is counting symbols already in memory then you know that this expression can't overflow since the size of a symbol in memory is bfd_section_* macros
This large patch removes the unnecessary bfd parameter from various bfd section macros and functions. The bfd is hardly ever used and if needed for the bfd_set_section_* or bfd_rename_section functions can be found via section->owner except for the com, und, abs, and ind std_section special sections. Those sections shouldn't be modified anyway. The patch also removes various bfd_get_section_<field> macros, replacing their use with bfd_section_<field>, and adds bfd_set_section_lma. I've also fixed a minor bug in gas where compressed section renaming was done directly rather than calling bfd_rename_section. Pass link_info to _bfd_merge_private_bfd_data
Most BFD linker functions take a bfd_link_info param, which reinforces
the fact that they are linker functions and allow access to linker
callbacks, eg. einfo for printing errors. I was going to use einfo

Return void from linker callbacks
The ldmain.c implementation of these linker callback functions always return true, so any code handling a false return is dead. What's more, some of the bfd backends abort if ever a false return is seen, and there seems to be some confusion in gdb's compile-object-load.c. The return value was never meant to be "oh yes, a multiple_definition error occurred", but rather "out of memory or other catastrophic failure". This patch removes the status return on the callbacks that always return true. Add output_type to bfd_link_info
The "shared" field in bfd_link_info is set for both DSO and and PIE.
There are separate fields for executable and relocatable outputs. This
patch adds an "output_type" field:

and a "pic" field to bfd_link_info to replace shared, executable and
relocatable fields so that we can use the "output_type" field to check
for output type and the "pic" field check if output is PIC. Macros,

and bfd_link_pie, are provided to check for output features.
