1889da7048 [binutils, ARM, 10/16] BFCSEL infrastructure with new global reloc R_ARM_THM_BF12
This patch is part of a series of patches to add support for Armv8.1-M Mainline
instructions to binutils.
This adds infrastructure for the BFCSEL instructions which is one of the first
instructions in Arm that have more than one relocations in them.

This adds a new relocation R_ARM_THM_BF12.

The inconsistency between external R_ARM_THM_BF12 and internal
BFD_RELOC_ARM_THUMB_BF13 is because internally we count the static bit-0 of the
immediate and we don't externally.

e2b0ab5978 [binutils, ARM, 4/16] BF insns infrastructure with array of relocs in struct arm_it
This patch is part of a series of patches to add support for ARMv8.1-M Mainline
instructions to binutils.
This adds infrastructure for the Branch Future instructions (BF, BFX, BFL,
BFLX, BFCSEL).
These are the first instructions in ARM that have more than one relocations in
them. Their external relocations can be found in the 'ELF for the Arm
Architecture - ABI 2019Q1' document on developer.arm.com

This is the second infrastructure patch that adds support to allow up to
3 relocations in an instruction. This is done by changing the reloc member of
struct arm_it to an array instead (relocs[3]). All the previous occurrences of
reloc can now to referring to relocs[0].

031254f211 [binutils, ARM, 1/16] Add support for Armv8.1-M Mainline CLI
The patch is straightforward, it does the following:

- support the new Tag_CPU_arch build attribute value, ie.:
   + declare the new value
+ update all the asserts forcing logic to be reviewed for new
     architectures
+ create a corresponding bfd_mach_arm_8_1M_MAIN enumerator in bfd and
add mapping from Tag_CPU_arch to it
+ teach readelf about new Tag_CPU_arch value
- declare armv8.1-m.main as a supported architecture value
- define Armv8.1-M Mainline in terms of feature bits available
- tell objdump mapping from bfd_mach_arm_8_1M_MAIN enumerator to feature
   bits available
- update architecture-specific logic in gas and bfd guarded by the
   asserts mentioned above.
- tests for all the above

34ef62f465 [GAS, Arm] CLI with architecture sensitive extensions
This patch adds a new framework to add architecture sensitive extensions, like
GCC does. This patch also implements all architecture extensions currently
available in GCC.

This framework works as follows. To enable architecture sensitive extensions
for a particular architecture, that architecture must contain an ARM_ARCH_OPT2
entry in the 'arm_archs' table. All fields here are the same as previous, with
the addition of a new extra field at the end to <name> it's extension table.
This <name>, corresponds to a <name>_ext_table of type 'struct arm_ext_table'.
This struct can be filled with three types of entries:

  ARM_ADD (string <ext>, arm_feature_set <enable_bits>), which means +<ext> will
      enable <enable_bits>
  ARM_REMOVE (string <ext>, arm_feature_set <disable_bits>), which means
      +no<ext> will disable <disable_bits>
  ARM_EXT (string <ext>, arm_feature_set <enable_bits>, arm_feature_set
      <disable_bits>), which means +<ext> will enable <enable_bits> and +no<ext>
will disable <disable_bits> (this is to be used instead of adding an
      ARM_ADD and ARM_REMOVE for the same <ext>)

This patch does not disable the use of the old extensions, even if some of them
are duplicated in the new tables. This is a "in-between-step" as we may want to
deprecate the old table of extensions in later patches. For now, GAS will first
look for the +<ext> or +no<ext> in the new table and if no entry is found it
will continue searching in the old table, following old behaviour. If only an
ARM_ADD or an ARM_REMOVE is defined for <ext> and +no<ext> or +<ext> resp. is
used then it also continues to search the old table for it.

A couple of caveats:
- This patch does not enable the use of these architecture extensions with the
'.arch_extension' directive. This is future work that I will tend to later.
- This patch does not enable the use of these architecture extensions with the
-mcpu option. This is future work that I will tend to later.
- This patch does not change the current behaviour when combining an
architecture extension and using -mfpu on the command-line. The current
behaviour of GAS is to stage the union of feature bits enabled by both -march
and -mfpu. GCC behaves differently here, so this is something we may want to
revisit on a later date.

f7dd2fb2e2 Arm: Backport hlt to all architectures.
The software trap instruction HLT that was introduced in Armv8-a is used
as the semihosting trap instruction in AArch64. In order to allow systems
configured to run AArch64 code to also run AArch32 with semihosting it was
decided that AArch32 should also use HLT in the case of the "mixed mode"
environment. This requires that HLT also be backported to all earlier
architectures. The instruction is in the undefined encoding space earlier
architectures but must trigger a semihosting trap [3].

The Arm Architectural Reference Manual [1] doesn't explicitly mention this
however this is an explicit requirement in the Semihosting-v2 protocol [2].

bc52d49c1d [arm] Check for neon and condition in vcvt.f16.f32
VCVT between f16 and f32 is an Advanced SIMD instruction.
Not all the VCVT alternatives need neon, hence the check for neon is in
the encode function.

The check on neon for VCVT.f16.f32 (and vice versa) is missing.

vshcmd: > echo 'vcvt.f16.f32 d1, q1' | gas/as-new -mfpu=vfpxd -march=armv8.5-a -
testdir [15:59:10] $

Also, the handling of the condition code behaves differently to other
SIMD instructions -- no error message is produced when assembling an
instruction with a condition code suffix despite the arm encoding not
allowing a condition code. (n.b. the actual binary produced is
independent of the suffix).

The instruction should be treated similarly to VSUBL that has the same
caveat of "must be unconditional" describing the {<c>} symbol. vcvt
half-precision to single precision found in F6.1.58 in the ARM
Architecture Reference Manual issue C.a, vsubl found in F6.1.240 in

c0c468d562 [ARM] Update bfd's Tag_CPU_arch knowledge
BFD's bfd_get_mach () function returns a bfd specific value representing
the architecture of the target which is populated from the Tag_CPU_arch
build attribute value of that target. Among other users of that
interfacem, objdump which uses it to print the architecture version of
the binary being examinated and to decide what instruction is available
if run with "-m arm" via its own mapping from bfd_mach_arm_X values to
feature bits available.

However, both BFD and objdump's most recent known architecture is
Armv5TE. When encountering a newer architecture bfd_get_mach will return
bfd_mach_arm_unknown. This is unfortunate since objdump uses that value
to allow all instructions on all architectures which is already what it
does by default, making the "-m arm" trick useless.

This patch updates BFD and objdump's knowledge of Arm architecture
versions up to the latest Armv8-M Baseline and Mainline, Armv8-R and
Armv8.4-A architectures. Since several architecture versions (eg. 8.X-A)
share the same Tag_CPU_arch build attribute value and
bfd_mach_arm values, the mapping from bfd machine value to feature bits
need to return the most featureful feature bits that would yield the
given bfd machine value otherwise some instruction would not disassemble
under "-m arm" mode. The patch rework that mapping to make this clearer
and simplify writing the mapping rules. In particular, for simplicity
all FPU instructions are allowed in all cases.

Finally, the patch also rewrite the cpu_arch_ver table in GAS to use the
TAG_CPU_ARCH_X macros rather than hardcode their value.

58ed5c38f5 Allow integer immediate for VFP vmov instructions.
This patch fixes the case where you want to use an integer value the
floating point immediate to a VFP vmov instruction such as
vmovmi.f32 s27, #11.

If the immediate is not a float we convert it and copy it's representation

a floating point immediate.

The is considered a QoL improvement for hand assembly writers and allows more

e7da50fa4b [ARM] Fix NULL dereference of march_ext_opt
Commit 4d354d8b89 introduced a NULL
pointer dereference by replacing a pointer assignment by a pointer
dereference assignment without adding a NULL pointer check. This patch
fixes it.

4d354d8b89 [ARM] Clean up selection of feature bits
I've always found the code in ARM backend of gas to control what
CPU/architecture and FPU are selected by the user and to support
autodetection of features complex and confusing. Chief among the
issues I have with that code is the lack of comments to explain
the meaning of the various variables. This patch addresses that
and much more:

- add comments to explain meaning of all arm_feature_set variables
- keep track of currently selected CPU, extensions and FPU in a separate
  set of new variables
- make naming of variable more consistent
- remove dead code
- simplify handling of extensions

The overall approach is as follows:

* restrict m*_opt variable to hold the feature bits of the
  corresponding mcpu/march/mfpu command-line options
* record selected CPU, extensions and FPU in new selected_* during
  md_begin
* whenever a .cpu/.arch/.arch_extension/.fpu directive is met, update
the corresponding selected_* variables (eg. selected_arch, then
selected_cpu for a .cpu or .arch directive) and then finally
  cpu_variant from them
* pass extension feature set pointer by value to arm_parse_extension
since it's only ever called from arm_parse_cpu and arm_parse_arch
which allocate the extension feature set themselves
* likewise, remove allocation from s_arm_arch_extension since the use
of arm_feature_set structure for selected_ext rather than a pointer
  alleviate the need for it
* in autodetection mode, only set all CPU fits in cpu_variant but leave
  selected_cpu* variables unset
* in md_begin, remove dead "else if" to set a default FPU when no FPU
was selected. Setting a default FPU based on CPU as did the code
before it turn dead should be based on the default FPU field of the
CPU and architecture table as will be done in a separate patch. Logic
is wrong anyway since it sets VFP2 as default FPU for Armv6-M and
  Armv7-M

Hopefully that should be enough to understand the change but if not feel
free to ask questions about the patch. While I believe the new code is
easier to understand, it remains complex and the old one was even more
complex so the change is difficult to understand.

This patch makes GAS emit a warning when trying to assemble the Armv8.2

df9909b867 [ARM] No IT usage deprecation for ARMv8-M
Deprecations related to the use of the IT instruction introduced in
Armv8-A do not apply to Armv8-M Baseline and mainline. However the
warning logic do not distinguish between the various profiles and warn
whenever the architecture version is 8.

This patch adds a check to exclude M profile architectures from this
warning. This works as expected when -march is specified on the
command-line or a .arch/.cpu directive exist. However, in autodetection
mode the CPU/architecture targeted is only known once the instructions
have been all processed but this code is run when IT instruction is
processed. It is therefore not possible to distinguish between Armv8-M
and Armv8-A in that mode.

The approach chosen here is not to warn in autodetection mode. The udf.d
testcase that relied on that behavior to test deprecation warning for
Armv8-A is therefore updated to explicitely pass -march=armv8-a.

5aa75429d0 [GAS/ARM] Clarify relation between reg_expected_msgs and arm_reg_type
Uses of reg_expected_msgs rely on each arm_reg_type enumerator to have a
message entry in the same order as the enumerator declaration. This is
not clearly stated in the definition of both the arm_reg_type enum and
the reg_expected_msgs. Worse, there is nothing to ensure both are kept
in sync.

As an attempt towards this, this patch uses C99 array designators to
ensure that each message is associated with the right arm_reg_type. A
comment is also added near the definition of arm_reg_type to point to
the reg_expected_msgs array. Finally, the array is synced with
arm_reg_type by adding the missing error message for REG_TYPE_RNB.
