The output file could be created before the input is gathered by tail,
erasing the later before it's being proceeded.
This happened on rare cases when performing remote tests on
Ubuntu 24.04.
Compilers may split functions, e.g. into a "hot" and "cold" part, or
they may emit special case instantiations (e.g. as a result of IPA). It
can be helpful to be able to disassemble all of the parts or clones in
one go. Permit using "--disassemble=" multiple times.
... when only their symbol was requested for disassembly. Addressing the
respective FIXME is as easy as coverting the "else" there to an if()
with the opposite condition, thus accounting for the disabling the
original if() may have effected.
We should set BFD_DECOMPRESS to decompress sections unless dumping the
section contents when reading build-id debuglink.

Adds two new external authors to etc/update-copyright.py to cover
bfd/ax_tls.m4, and adds gprofng to dirs handled automatically, then
updates copyright messages as follows:
1) Update cgen/utils.scm emitted copyrights.
2) Run "etc/update-copyright.py --this-year" with an extra external
author I haven't committed, 'Kalray SA.', to cover gas testsuite
files (which should have their copyright message removed).

The newer update-copyright.py fixes file encoding too, removing cr/lf

When launching the testsuite through runtest outside the build tree,
gentestdlls might not be available, this binary being created by make
check.
Simply untested the related tests instead of crashing.

nds32_elf_get_relocated_section_contents uses nds32_get_section_contents
to read sections contents, but nds32_get_section_contents has the wrong
behaviour as it calls bfd_malloc_and_get_section. That function always
mallocs its output buffer, whereas get_relocated_section_contents must
support an already allocated buffer.

There are a number of targets that don't support thin archives (*),
and vms doesn't even support file name extensions other than .obj for
archives containing object files. This patch adjusts the testsuite
to cater for the vms restriction, and reenables testing for non-ELF
alpha targets. That adds a few alpha-dec-vms fails and one
alpha-linuxecoff fail but testsuite fails on those targets are nothing
new.
(*) It might seem like they do if binutils is built with
--enable-plugins but the plugin archive support is broken, causing the
wrong type of archives to be created by ar for those targets.

The newly added objdump -S tests check for source line mapping of a static

Setting CC_FOR_TARGET from the environment CC was just plain wrong,
and no doubt the reason these tests were only run natively.

This patch doesn't stop the build-id and debuglink tests using the
installed ld, it just prevents a compiler failure from resulting in a

seem all that important.

in binutils_assemble has been removed, we need to take more care in

I am applying the rather large patch attached to this email to enhance
the readelf and objdump programs so that they now have the ability to
follow links to separate debug info files. (As requested by PR
15152). So for example whereas before we had this output:
$ readelf -wi main.exe

With the new option enabled we get:

Naturally there are long versions of these options (=follow-links and
=links). The documentation has been updated as well, and since both
readelf and objdump use the same set of debug display options, I have
moved the text into a separate file. There are also a couple of new
binutils tests to exercise the new behaviour.
There are a couple of missing features in the current patch however,
although I do intend to address them in follow up submissions:
Firstly the code does not check the build-id inside separate debug
info files when it is searching for a file specified by a
.gnu_debugaltlink section. It just assumes that if the file is there,
then it contains the information being sought.
Secondly I have not checked the DWARF-5 version of these link
features, so there will probably be code to add there.
Thirdly I have only implemented link following for the
DW_FORM_GNU_strp_alt format. Other alternate formats (eg
DW_FORM_GNU_ref_alt) have yet to be implemented.
Lastly, whilst implementing this feature I found it necessary to move
some of the global variables used by readelf (eg section_headers) into
a structure that can be passed around. I have moved all of the global
variables that were necessary to get the patch working, but I need to
complete the operation and move the remaining, file-specific variables
(eg dynamic_strings).
