6398ac7e8b gas v850 md_convert_frag 
The v850 md_convert_frag function oddly calls subseg_change twice
(commit 1cd986c585).  Neither call is needed, because that is done
in size_seg.

Convert the fr_opcode fixup field back (to an opindex, not fx_r_type)
using a cast rather than a union, since we used casts when setting up
those values.  I guess the union was added to silence compiler
warnings about wrong-size casts, but unfortunately results in the
wrong value being retrieved on big-endian hosts.

Change "buffer" to a char* as there is no need to make it an
unsigned char*, and that way requires fewer casts.  Finally, fix
formatting and use uintptr_t when make the rs_machine_dependent frags.

Remove subseg_change calls from cr16, crx, mn10200, mn10300, and sh
md_convert_frag too.

a32922a7b9 gas char/unsigned char casts 
This patch removes many unneeded casts to char or unsigned char.  It's
worth noting that safe-ctype.h macros ISDIGIT and the like cope with
either signed or unsigned char.
In some cases a cast to unsigned char is replaced by anding with 0xff,
which accomplishes the same thing but doesn't rely on char being eight
bits.  The patch also removes pointer casts, and a few unsigned char
pointer variables.

a5b6fadf88 gas various other void* casts 
This removes assorted unneeded casts of void* pointers, and casts when
passing args to void* parameters or storing to void* pointers.  The
patch also changes obj-coff.c stack_push to take a void* parameter,
and replaces an odd memcpy in tc-metag.c find_insn_templates with a
simple assignment.

1a12e548ba gas NULL casts 
This removes many unnecessary NULL casts.  I'm also adding a few arg
casts in concat calls, to make the code consistent.  Advice from quite
a few years ago was that it's better to use the exact type for args
corresponding to function ellipses, in case NULL is defined as plain
0.  (I think that happened with some early 64-bit systems.  Plain NULL
ought to be OK nowadays.)

Many frag_var calls have unnecessary casts on arguments, no doubt from
the days when binutils was written for K&R C.  (ie. functions were not
prototyped so you needed to cast anything that didn't match the
expected type after default promotions, as you still do for args
matching a function ellipsis.)  Remove those casts.

	to avoid need for casts.  Remove casts from frag_var args.

023b7811d6 gas: also maintain signed-ness for O_big expressions 
Interestingly emit_leb128_expr() already assumes X_unsigned is properly
set for O_big. Adjust its conversion-to-bignum to respect the incoming
flag, and have convert_to_bignum() correctly set it on output.

It further can't be quite right that convert_to_bignum() depends on
anything other than the incoming expression. Therefore adjust
emit_expr_with_reloc() to be in line with the other invocation.

This also requires an adjustment for SH, which really should have been
part of 762acf217c ("gas: maintain O_constant signedness in more
cases").

7e34612049 str_hash_find casts 
Putting an explicit cast on the void* return from str_hash_find isn't
necessary and doesn't add much to code clarity.  In other cases, poor
choice of function parameter types, eg. "void *value" in
tc-aarch64.c checked_hash_insert rather than "const void *value" leads
to needing (void *) casts all over the place just to cast away const.
Fix that by correcting the parameter type.  (And it really is a const,
the function and str_hash_insert don't modify the strings.)
This patch also removes some unnecessary casts in hash.c

f483688fd0 SH: use is_whitespace() 
Wherever blanks are permissible in input, tabs ought to be permissible,
too. This is particularly relevant when -f is passed to gas (alongside
appropriate input). Also convert open-coded checks as well as an
ISSPACE() use. At the same time use is_end_of_stmt() instead of
(kind-of-)open-coded checks in adjacent code.

044dd6345f gas: make deferred expression evaluation generally latch dot 
Deferring expression evaluation is often necessary. However, the value
current_location() records typically is intended to represent the
location at the point of use of the expression, with the exception being
.eqv (or its == equivalent). Change how expr_defer behaves in this
regard, and introduce a special mode just for pseudo_set() to use.

Introduce a predicate to cover both "deferred" modes, and use it
everywhere except in current_location(), where only the new mode wants
checking for.

3fb6f5457e gas tc_gen_reloc memory leaks 
This makes all the tc_gen_reloc functions and the associated array in
write.c:write_relocs use notes_alloc rather than malloc.  tc-hppa.c
tc_gen_reloc gets a few more changes, deleting some dead code, and
tidying code that duplicates prior initialisation.

641cf0e2c0 gas: constify md_{short,long}opts and md_longopts_size 
First of all make the declarations globally visible, such that producer
and consumer actually share them.

For the latter two simply add const (as PPC already had it,), while for
the former achieve the effect by converting to an array: There's no need
for the extra level of indirection.

fd67aa1129 Update year range in copyright notice of binutils files 
Adds two new external authors to etc/update-copyright.py to cover
bfd/ax_tls.m4, and adds gprofng to dirs handled automatically, then
updates copyright messages as follows:

1) Update cgen/utils.scm emitted copyrights.
2) Run "etc/update-copyright.py --this-year" with an extra external
   author I haven't committed, 'Kalray SA.', to cover gas testsuite
   files (which should have their copyright message removed).
3) Build with --enable-maintainer-mode --enable-cgen-maint=yes.
4) Check out */po/*.pot which we don't update frequently.

a2c5833233 Update year range in copyright notice of binutils files 
The result of running etc/update-copyright.py --this-year, fixing all
the files whose mode is changed by the script, plus a build with
--enable-maintainer-mode --enable-cgen-maint=yes, then checking
out */po/*.pot which we don't update frequently.

The copy of cgen was with commit d1dd5fcc38ead reverted as that commit
breaks building of bfp opcodes files.

Inserting with replacement is wrong for some gas hash table uses.
This patch implements an htab_insert that conditionally replaces, and
similarly for str_hash_insert.  str_hash_insert with replace=0 is
roughly equivalent to the older hash_insert, and str_hash_insert with
replace=1 to the older hash_jam, but return values are different.  I
found it useful to know whether the slot was occupied prior to
inserting/replacing.  I've also reinstated the fatal errors on messing
up opcode tables with duplicates.

e01e1cee39 Rearrange symbol_create parameters 
These functions take an offset within frag, frag within section, and
section parameter.  So it makes sense to order the parameters as
section, frag, offset.

fd3619828e bfd_section_* macros 
This large patch removes the unnecessary bfd parameter from various
bfd section macros and functions.  The bfd is hardly ever used and if
needed for the bfd_set_section_* or bfd_rename_section functions can
be found via section->owner except for the com, und, abs, and ind
std_section special sections.  Those sections shouldn't be modified
anyway.

The patch also removes various bfd_get_section_<field> macros,
replacing their use with bfd_section_<field>, and adds
bfd_set_section_lma.  I've also fixed a minor bug in gas where
compressed section renaming was done directly rather than calling
bfd_rename_section.  This would have broken bfd_get_section_by_name
and similar functions, but that hardly mattered at such a late stage
in gas processing.

8d1015a887 Move struc-symbol.h to symbols.c 
This file was never supposed to be widely used.  The fact that it has
found its way into many gas files led to bugs, typically when code
expecting a symbolS* to point at a struct symbol is presented with a
struct local_symbol.  Also, commit 158184ac9e changed these structs in
2012 but didn't catch all places where symbol bsym was being used to
test for a local_symbol.

	* Makefile.am (HFILES): Delete struc-symbol.h.
	* doc/internals.texi: Delete struc-symbol.h reference and out
	of date local symbol description.
	* struc-symbol.h: Delete.  Move contents to..
	* symbols.c: ..here.
	(symbol_on_chain, symbol_symbolS): New functions.

The values are always members of the enum, except the two places -1 is assigned
only to playcate -Wuninitialized because gcc isn't or at least didn't used to
be smart enough to figure out its only used if it was set.

17b9d67d4e make md_parse_option () take a const char * 
This is mostly just adding const in many places, however there are a couple
interesting things.  We need to add casts in tc-s390.c and tc-cris.c because
they have functions that assign to input_line_pointer an argument that
sometimes comes from md_parse_option.  Presumably this is safe because those
targets never pass literals to md_parse_option (), but this code should
probably be improved in the future.  Also xtensa passes the argument to strtoll
which is a rather odd function, it takes a const char * as argument and returns
a pointer into that string as a char * through an out argument, but we can work
around that by adding more variables.
