97df0abb93 bfd/ELF: _bfd_elf_link_create_dynamic_sections() is exposed to ld
As a non-private function, it shouldn't have "_bfd_" prefixes, but merely
a "bfd_" one. Even if, sadly, it needs exposing just for the sake for
VxWorks.

129cdfc164 RELOC_AGAINST_DISCARDED_SECTION zero size reloc sections
For some reason the initial implementation (commit 0672748ac0) of
this macro didn't allow discarding of all relocs in a section, perhaps
because doing so would require a testsuite change. This patch allows
zero size relocation sections to result, and adjusts the testsuite.
i386, x86_64, ppc and ppc64 code that avoids a memmove is also changed
to allow zero size reloc sections, and arc fixed to actually adjust
the reloc section header.

cb6326b5ce sec->alloced and freeing section contents
This modifies _bfd_elf_free_cached_info to unmap/free section
contents. To do that we need to *not* free sections where contents
are bfd_alloc'd or point to constant strings or somesuch. I've chosen
to implement this be adding another flag to struct bfd_section,
"alloced" to say the section contents can't be freed. Most of the
patch is about setting that flag in many places.

f6a18d1f55 ARC e_flags vs. objcopy
While the patch that Nick reverted in commit 3f6a060c75 was in the
source, "FAIL: objcopy executable (pr25662)" was seen on ARC. The
failure was triggered by the .ARC.attributes section being removed by
the linker script. When a file lacking this section is copied by
objcopy, e_flags from the input is copied to the output (in this case
the value 0x406), but arc_elf_final_write_processing then logical-ors
in 0x300 when Tag_ARC_ABI_osver is not found.

	* elf32-arc.c (arc_elf_final_write_processing): Don't ignore
	existing e_flags for objcopy.

af969b14ae PR 30569, always call elf_backend_size_dynamic_sections
This largely mechanical patch is preparation for a followup patch.

For quite some time I've thought that it would be useful to call
elf_backend_size_dynamic_sections even when no dynamic objects are
seen by the linker. That's what this patch does, with some renaming.
There are no functional changes to the linker, just a move of the
dynobj test in bfd_elf_size_dynamic_sections to target backend
functions, replacing the asserts/aborts already there. No doubt some
of the current always_size_sections functions could be moved to
size_dynamic_sections but I haven't made that change.

Because both hooks are now always called, I have renamed
always_size_sections to early_size_sections and size_dynamic_sections
to late_size_sections.  I condisdered calling late_size_sections plain
size_sections, since this is the usual target dynamic section sizing
hook, but decided that searching the sources for "size_sections" would
then hit early_size_sections and other functions.

cf95b909e2 elf_backend_finish_dynamic_symbol returning false
Returning false from elf_backend_finish_dynamic_symbol will not result
in an error being printed unless bfd_error is set but will result in
the linker exiting with a non-zero status. If just bfd_error is set
then a generic "final link failed" will result, which doesn't help a
user much. So elf_backend_finish_dynamic_symbol should print its own
error message whenever returning false, or use BFD_ASSERT or abort to
print assertion failures for conditions that shouldn't occur.

This patch does that, and removes unnecessary "htab != NULL" tests in
elf_backend_finish_dynamic_symbol.  Such tests aren't needed in a
function only called via elf_backend_data.

fd67aa1129 Update year range in copyright notice of binutils files
Adds two new external authors to etc/update-copyright.py to cover
bfd/ax_tls.m4, and adds gprofng to dirs handled automatically, then
updates copyright messages as follows:

1) Update cgen/utils.scm emitted copyrights.
2) Run "etc/update-copyright.py --this-year" with an extra external
   author I haven't committed, 'Kalray SA.', to cover gas testsuite
   files (which should have their copyright message removed).
3) Build with --enable-maintainer-mode --enable-cgen-maint=yes.
4) Check out */po/*.pot which we don't update frequently.

06e8d9861d arc: Add new ARCv3 ISA to BFD.
The new Synopsys's ARCv3 ISA is capable to run either 64-bit or
32-bit ISA. The new 32-bit ISA is not compatible with the old
Synopsys ARCv1/ARCv2 ISA, however, it retains a lot of common
concepts. Thus, this patch is reusing the old ARC BFD backend and
adds the necessary bits for the new architecture in a similar way as
it is done for RISCV backend.

0a43fbaa23 arc: Fix alignment of the TLS Translation Control Block
The R_ARC_TLS_LE_32 is defined as S + A + TLS_TBSS - TLS_REL, where

  - S is the base address of the symbol in the memory
  - A is the symbol addendum
  - TLS_TBSS is the TLS Translation Control Block size (aligned)
  - TLS_REL is the base of the TLS section

Given the next code snip:

__thread int data_var = 12;
__attribute__((__aligned__(128))) __thread int data_var_128 = 128;
__thread int bss_var;
__attribute__((__aligned__(256))) __thread int bss_var_256;

int __start(void)
{
	return data_var + data_var_128 + bss_var + bss_var_256;
}

The current code returns different TLS_TBSS values for .tdata and
.tbss. This patch fixes this by using the linker provided tls_sec.

57698478b7 Don't encode reloc.size
I expect the encoded reloc.size field originally came from aout
r_length ecoding, but somehow went wrong for 64-bit relocs (which

63b4cc53dc TRUE/FALSE simplification
There is really no need to write code like "foo != 0 ? TRUE : FALSE"
unless we had stupidly defined FALSE as something other than 0 or TRUE
as something other than 1. The simpler "foo != 0" does just as well.
Similarly "(condition == TRUE)" or "(condition == FALSE) can be
simplified to "(condition)" and "(!condition)" respectively.

I'll note that there is reason to use "integer_expression != 0" when
assigning a bfd_boolean rather than the simpler "integer_expression",
if you expect the variable to have 0 or 1 value. It's probably even a
good idea to not rely on implicit conversion if bfd_boolean were _Bool.

0f68420117 elf_backend_relocate_section int vs. bfd_boolean
This functions was changed to return an int in commit ece5ef6079 but
since bfd_boolean was an int typedef I lazily left all the ELF
relocate_section functions as returning bfd_boolean, except the SPU
one. In order to use _Bool or bool in place of bfd_boolean we need to
be fussy about the return types.

cf2611febc arc: Use correct string when printing bfd DEBUG data
PRINT_DEBUG_RELOC_INFO_BEFORE() macro prints bunch of parameters
for debugging purposes. Due to a seemingly copy/paste mistake,
the "input_section->vma" is printed under the field name
"symbol_section->vma".  This commit fixes that.

This fix is a courtesy of xiangzhai.

fd3619828e bfd_section_* macros
This large patch removes the unnecessary bfd parameter from various
bfd section macros and functions. The bfd is hardly ever used and if
needed for the bfd_set_section_* or bfd_rename_section functions can
be found via section->owner except for the com, und, abs, and ind
std_section special sections. Those sections shouldn't be modified
anyway.

The patch also removes various bfd_get_section_<field> macros,
replacing their use with bfd_section_<field>, and adds
bfd_set_section_lma. I've also fixed a minor bug in gas where
compressed section renaming was done directly rather than calling
bfd_rename_section. This would have broken bfd_get_section_by_name
and similar functions, but that hardly mattered at such a late stage
in gas processing.

a0e90a73f0 [ARC] don't force _init/_fini as DT_INIT/DT_FINI.
Recent gcc commit b4371b277f1e ("[ARC] Enable init_array support")
inhibits DT_"INIT,FINI} in favor of DT_{INIT,FINI}ARRAY.

Even prior to that, it seems ARC port is the only one with this
special DT_INIT/FINI handling in linker emulation. Removing it
doesn't seem to change any uClibc/glibc testsuite results,
so this can RIP anyways.

0930cb3021 _bfd_clear_contents bounds checking
This PR shows a fuzzed binary triggering a segfault via a bad
relocation in .debug_line. It turns out that unlike normal
relocations applied to a section, the linker applies those with
symbols from discarded sections via _bfd_clear_contents without
checking that the relocation is within the section bounds. The same
thing now happens when reading debug sections since commit
a4cd947aca, the PR23425 fix.
